Sports Betting Permitted To Non-Muslims In Malaysia
As reported by the Associated Press, May 13, 2010, a corporation associated industrialist, Vincent Tan, has established support to run global sports betting for non-Muslims in Malaysia. Part of government labors to defy illegitimate gambling predicted to be around billions of dollars every year.
The finance minister has agreed to permit Ascot Sports to bid on sports like tennis, soccer, golf, basketball and racing. It is according to a late Wednesday report issued by Tan’s corporation Berjaya corp., which will be buying 70% of Ascot for $163 million. Ministry officials did not comment on Thursday.
Gambling is a political biased matter in Malaysia, where racial Malay Muslims including nearly 2/3rd of the country’s population. The ethnic Chinese and Indians are permitted to buy lotteries and bet on races, but not on any other sports.
According to the industry official’s, illegal betting in Malaysia could amount to $6.2 billion a year, with betting on soccer, scoring the most.
By August, Ascot will be launching gambling services, but that will not be before FIFA World Cup in SA, an anonymous official from Berjaya stated. This service will be tendered via some selected outlets and telephones to adult non-Muslims, as stated by Berjaya. According to the official, betting might be offered online after seeking approval.
But the Federation of Malaysia Consumers Association has criticized the government, reminding the government about their responsibility of stop betting.
