As reported on 9th March, 2009 there was a big topic for the MEP’s to debate on—if online betting was to be synchronized at a state or European rank. As in Europe around 3 million people bet on football, horse racing and cricket online. For many of them its just an entertainment but addiction of match fixing are feared due to this. Though the MEP’s were set to debate, there were many among them who were against regulating betting. The reports by the Parliament’s internal working committee for calling national governments to regulate betting generated a lot of controversies, which followed 400 amendments to be made. However the final report asks the government to take a common position on some issues like betting addiction, misuse of credit cards, age limits to be set for betting and illegal betting behavior.
A modification calls to set up a pre paid card or maximum limit a person should bet. Though the report had a minority vote that is 32-10 MEP’s believing that betting should be regularized. There was a public hearing in February about the menace of match fixing and unlawful sports betting due to online gambling. To support this, examples were cited of Hans Cronje (SA cricket) and Bruce Grobbelaar (Liverpool goal keeper) which proved how players can be influenced by betting syndicates.
It was also made clear by one of the members, Arlene McCarthy of the hearing committee, warning the national government that the insincere national rules would only protect the betting companies.
