Sports Betting Permitted In Delaware

On the proposal of Governor Jack Markell to legalize sports betting in the state, the Delaware legislature went for a vote in his favor on Tuesday. Markell will be signing the bill into law anytime this week, as reported on May 13, 2009.

Markell was of the view that Delaware state lottery would earn enough cash to fund their core commitments. He is positive that sports betting would generate $50 million in the first year only to cover up the budget deficit of $800 million faced by his state.

Markell during his governor’s campaign had said that he would legalize sports betting in the state to cover up the deficit, but when his bill was voted initially, it was rejected by the Delaware house.

After a long negotiation between Markell and the state legislators, there was a compromise. Later Markell said that he was pleased that the legislature acted swiftly in passing the lottery legislation.

But the NFL and the NCAA who pitted against the bill sent an email stating that all the people involved in the administration of sports association should evaluate today’s action and its result.

The Wilmington News Journal reported that the NFL had filed a suit in the Supreme Court and has been scheduled a hearing by the court for May 21.

Markell wants his betting bill to pass as soon as possible by the senate and Delaware house before the onset of NFL season. As that is when most of the betting activities take place.

Markell wanted the Supreme court to make it clear whether head-to head betting is authorized in the state or not. But the court waited till the bill became law. And so Markell hopes to win more votes in his favor.
